Battle of the Pop Charts

April 1977 versus April 2002

ABBASUGARBABES

Slagging off the detritus that floats to the top of the pop charts has always been a favourite pastime of those who consider it their duty to stand in judgement on the musical tastes of the mindless majority. Recently this chorus of disapproval has reached a crescendo of disgust. But has chart music genuinely reached at all-time nadir or are the legion of critics just displaying selective memory syndrome. Let's roll back the years to 1977 and compare the UK Top Ten of the equivalent week in that year with the current crop of bestsellers. How do the contenders stack up  head to head ?

Let the Pulse Panel decide

 5 May 2002 30 April 1977 Pulse Panel Result
1. Freak Like Me - Sugarbabes Knowing Me Knowing You - Abba Away Win.

Against almost anything else in the 1977 chart the Sugarbabes legitimised bootleg would be a surefire winner. Unfortunately for the UK's current best girl group (not that the competition is exactly very strong) this is arguably ABBA's finest moment.

2.  One Step Closer - S Club 7 Juniors Red Light Spells Danger - Billy Ocean  Away Win.

Pre-teen manufactured moppets' take on Caribbean King's salutary warning about the fleshpots of Amsterdam. And there's only one result.

3.  Girlfriend - NSync Free - Deniece Williams Away Win.

NSync rope in R & B star Nelly to try and boost their credibility rating but still get their butts kicked by a genuine soul contender.

4. The Hindu Times - Oasis Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder Away Win.

Not the most highly-regarded jewel in the crown that is the boy-Wonder's back catalogue but it still shines more than bright enough to see off the dreary Mancunian whiners.

5. How You Remind Me - Nickelback I Don't Want To Put A Hold On You - Berni Flint  Home Win.

God knows why these hairy rockers have had such success with this. Perhaps he also knows what happened to Berni Flint (Opportunity Knocks winner un-extraordinaire).

6. Whenever Wherever - Shakira Have I The Right -  Dead End Kids  Home Win.

Just on the strength of her daft lyrics and snake-like hips Shakira would have the beating of far stronger opponents than these teeny-bopper one (regurgitated) hit wonders.

7.
Lazy - X-Press 2 featuring David Byrne
You Don't Have To Be A Star - Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr  Home Win.

Best mainstream dance record of the year by a
considerable distance, X-Press 2's masterly combination of Heady vocals and Where Love Lives beats, easily gets the nod over the kitsch-soul crooners.

8. Unchained Melody - Gareth Gates Going In With My Eyes Open - David Soul No Score Draw.

Pop idols past and present cancel each other out in the wet warbling head to head. Although at least Starsky came out with some original material (as opposed to a song which has already been a No.1 for three other acts !)

9. You Held The World In Your Arms - Idlewild Pearl's A Singer - Elkie Brooks Home Win.

Earnest and dull Idlewild may be but at least they don't try for the sympathy vote. Unlike Brooks' bar-room dirge which formed part of the lamentable seventies trend for songs which 'tell a story'.

10. 4 My People - Missy Elliott Sunny - Boney M Home Win.

No contest here. Missy comes up with some more block rockin' 21st century beats while Boney M demonstrate why any attempts to positively reappraise their legacy are seriouslu misplaced.

FINAL SCORE - 2002 - 5½   1977 - 4½

Which just goes to show that hindsight can play tricks on us all. 1977 is supposed to have been all about the heyday of punk and disco but you'd hardly know that from the state of the Top Ten. 25 years from now we could all be looking fondly back at a golden age of music that most people are doing their best to ignore while its actually around.
